So after checking out London and Delhi, we finally made it to Kathmandu yesterday. Safe and relatively sound. The flights were relatively uneventful, though on the London to Delhi leg (8+ hours), Yen found herself wedged between a COS (customer of size) and myself (also not that small.) He was a very tall and wide guy who eventually got cut off the beer by airline staff and also took up sometimes up to 50% of her seat space (and floor space.) Awesome.
We arrived in Delhi just short of 2am and our flight to Kathmandu wasn't scheduled to leave until 1:05pm. Although we knew about this wait ahead of time, staring it in the face with 11 hours to go was a tad disheartening to say the least. When booking there was a 6:45am flight to Kathmandu that the travel agent discouraged us from because it would take too long to get from gate to gate. I guess she didn't know that it was a 47 second saunter between the two. I guess we did only have 5 and a half hours. (!#$%^$%&^!)
Anyway we managed to find the airline office to try to get ourselves onto the next flight and eventually managed to do it though it involved getting the runaround from many people in various buildings.
When we got to Kathmandu and made it to the guest house we're staying at it was about 9am. We dropped off our stuff and hit the road, walking around in the tiny streets packed with people, bicycles, motor cycles and even cars. There seem to be no formal rules to adhere to as far as streets are concerned. "Try not to hit anything" might be the only semblance of a rule I've been able to sqeeze out thus far... more of a suggestion though really.
So not much more to say about Kathmandu yet. We've been trying to fill ourselves with local food and walk it off by checking out temples at the top of big staircases in between.
That's it for now. We'll have to fill in the rest later, though we're meeting up with our travel group and setting off for the trek on Monday so this could actually be the first and last installment for a good while. In any case, we've arrived safely and miss you all!
